In what could be termed as a realization of a dream seen by late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu and Mrs Manveen Sandhu along with Olympian Balwinder Singh Shammi of seeing the hockey students of their school represent India in various international level tournaments, Ramandeep Singh, a former Spring Dalean, has been selected to play in the hockey team that would represent India in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Giving details, Mr Rajiv Kumar Sharma, Principal, Spring Dale Senior School, said that Ramandeep Singh was a part of the first batch of students, who graduated from Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Academy, founded by late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu and Mrs Manveen Sandhu to revive hockey in the state and to encourage promising sports persons to take up the sport.

He added that Ramandeep Singh was one of the highest paid hockey players of India during the Premier Hockey League. "The school is proud of his achievement and wishes him all the best for the Rio 2016 Olympics," he said.

Dr Kirat Sandhu Cheema, Director, Spring Dale Senior School, and Mr Sahiljit Singh Sandhu, Managing Trustee, Spring Dale Educational Society, said that hockey is one sport that the school had been promoting for the past many years. "It was our parents' dream to revive hockey in the region and to see local youth emerge as international level hockey players. Ramandeep's selection for the Rio 2016 Olympics is a realization of the same," they said.

They further said that the efforts of Spring Dale Educational Society in imparting specialized training to future hockey Olympians could be judged from the fact that a number of potential players take training under national and international level coaches at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Academy.

“These students have been integrated in main stream education while they are studying in Spring Dale Senior School. They are provided with free education including books, stationery and study material to them, while special provisions have also been made for their diet and full access to infrastructural and IT facilities,” they said.

They added that besides this, Baba Bhila Singh Hockey Academy was founded by late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu in village Narli in pursuance with the aim of enabling hockey to emerge as a popular sport among the rural youth.
